If you’ve ever bought cheap jewelry that leaves a green spot on your skin you’ve most likely asked yourself what causes it. Basically ; there is a reaction caused by base metal to people who wears jewelry that is cheaper.
The greening can occur to some faster than others- though, because everyone’s skin is different.
Truth be told expensive jewelry can turn people’s skin green<, reason being it's not one hundred percent pure~ regardless of gold or silver content. Platinum hardly ever reacts with skin so no worries if the stuff you wear is 100% platinum. To try to stop gold jewelry from making your skin green be sure its not made from cheap metal and then plated – it has only a very fine coating of gold over top of a base metal that will wear off. For 'real' gold jewelry opting for 18 karat only can help reduce the marks that are left on your skin.
Copper jewelry will green your skin and there isn’t a whole lot you can do about that.
Try to avoid wearing jewelry when you’re sweating a lot it can amplify the skin to metal reaction you can also get a special coating put on – to minimize the amount of green reaction your skin has. If you can find something to keep the reaction to a minimum you can keep wearing your base metal jewelry without worry. Don’t forget- the green effect won’t hurt you. It’s just a skin reaction and not an allergic reaction.
Allergies (such as those to nickel) turn your skin red plus it could also make your skin feel itchy and inflamed. Which is nothing like a green skin reaction.
If you do show signs of allery stop wearing the jewelry. If all you have is green skin you are safe to keep wearing the jewelry you’ll just have to keep the area clean so its not ugly.
Truth be told applying a coating is probably the answer.
